Gujarati Typing - A Guide to Complex Conjunct Characters Part 3: Mastering Complex Conjunct Characters

Conjunct characters (યુગ્માક્ષરો) occur when two or more consonants merge into a single unit. These are essential in Gujarati because they frequently appear in common words.

How to Type Conjunct Characters?

To form conjunct characters, you must use the halant (્) key to remove the inherent vowel and join consonants:

  1. Double Consonants:

    • "ન" + "્" + "ન" = "ન્ન" (nna) → Type "n" + "]" + "n"
    • "મ" + "્" + "મ" = "મ્મ" (mma) → Type "m" + "]" + "m"
  2. Common Conjuncts:

    • "ત" + "્" + "ર" = "ત્ર" (tra) → Type "t" + "]" + "r"
    • "ક" + "્" + "ષ" = "ક્ષ" (ksha) → Type "k" + "]" + "S"
    • "પ" + "્" + "ય" = "પ્ય" (pya) → Type "p" + "]" + "y"

Practice with Conjunct Characters

Typing conjunct characters correctly requires practice. Try typing common Gujarati words like:

  • સંગીત (sangeet)
  • પ્રયત્ન (prayatna)
  • ઉદ્યોગ (udhyog)

These words contain conjuncts that you will frequently encounter in Gujarati.
