MS Word - AutoRecover Settings
AutoRecover protects unsaved work by automatically storing a temporary copy of a document at regular intervals. This feature reduces the impact of crashes, power failures or accidental program closures by helping users recover information that was not manually saved. It acts as a silent backup assistant working in the background while typing.
How AutoRecover Works
When AutoRecover is active, Word creates small checkpoint files during editing. These files do not replace regular saving but store snapshots so users can reopen Word and continue near where they left off. Once a file is saved manually and the program is closed correctly, the temporary copies are deleted, keeping storage tidy without user effort.
Adjusting Backup Frequency
AutoRecover timing can be customized in Word Options. Users may shorten the interval for frequent protection or extend it if performance becomes slower. Shorter intervals mean fewer lost sentences if a crash happens, which is important for heavy typing sessions or long, detailed documents.
Locating Recovery Files After a Crash
If Word closes unexpectedly, reopening it usually launches the Document Recovery pane. This pane lists files and versions that AutoRecover stored, allowing users to select the most complete draft. Choosing the correct entry restores lost progress and prevents the need to rewrite large sections from memory.
Difference Between AutoRecover and Autosave
AutoRecover works for all documents, whether stored locally or in the cloud, but it saves only periodically. Autosave applies mainly to cloud files saved on OneDrive or SharePoint and updates continuously as the user types. Understanding this difference helps users rely on the right feature depending on storage location and workflow.
Why AutoRecover Should Stay Enabled
Leaving AutoRecover active provides ongoing insurance against common disruptions. Even skilled users make mistakes or experience unexpected shutdowns, and this feature ensures their effort is preserved whenever possible. AutoRecover encourages confident editing and prevents frustration caused by losing hours of writing due to events outside the user’s control.
