MS Word - Text Alignments in Word

In Microsoft Word, text alignment refers to how text is positioned horizontally between the page margins. There are four main types of text alignment in Word, and each serves a different purpose depending on the document style.


Types of Text Alignments in Word

1. Left Alignment (Default)

  • Shortcut: Ctrl + L

  • Description: Aligns text to the left margin while keeping the right edge uneven.

  • Usage: Common for most documents, letters, reports, and essays.

  • Example:

    This is left-aligned text.
    It starts from the left margin.
    

2. Center Alignment

  • Shortcut: Ctrl + E

  • Description: Aligns text equally between the left and right margins.

  • Usage: Best for titles, headings, certificates, and invitations.

  • Example:

             This is centered text.
           It is placed in the middle.
    

3. Right Alignment

  • Shortcut: Ctrl + R

  • Description: Aligns text to the right margin while leaving the left edge uneven.

  • Usage: Common for dates, author names, and addresses in letters.

  • Example:

                                   This is right-aligned text.
                                It starts from the right margin.
    

4. Justify Alignment

  • Shortcut: Ctrl + J

  • Description: Aligns text evenly on both the left and right margins by adjusting word spacing.

  • Usage: Commonly used in newspapers, books, magazines, and formal documents for a clean, professional look.

  • Example:

    This is justified text, which aligns evenly along both the left and right margins.
    It creates a clean, polished appearance in documents.
    

How to Change Text Alignment

Method 1 – Using Ribbon:

  1. Go to the Home tab.

  2. In the Paragraph group, select one of the four alignment buttons:

    • Left

    • Center

    • Right

    • Justify

Method 2 – Using Keyboard Shortcuts:
