Tamil Typing - A Comprehensive Guide PART 3: Typing Conjunct Characters and Sandhi Rules
What are Conjunct Characters (Sandhi Ezhuthukkal)?
In Tamil, two consonants sometimes merge together to form a new character. These are called sandhi letters (சந்தி எழுத்துகள்).
For example:
- க் + ஷ = க்ஷ (ksha)
- ஞ் + ச = ஞ்ச (ncha)
- ட் + ட = ட்ட (tta)
- ந் + த = ந்த (nta)
How to Type Conjunct Characters?
- Use the "pulli" (்) symbol to remove the inherent vowel from the first consonant.
- Then type the second consonant to form the conjunct character.
Example:
- ந + ் + த = ந்த (nta)
Common Tamil Words with Conjuncts
- படிப்பு (padippu) – Studies
- கொண்டு (kondu) – Having
- மன்னிப்பு (mannippu) – Forgiveness
Typing conjunct characters correctly is crucial for professional Tamil writing.
