Computer Basics - Expansion Slots
What Are Expansion Slots?
Expansion slots are connectors on the motherboard that allow you to add additional components (also called expansion cards) to your computer. These components give your system extra features or capabilities that the motherboard may not have built in.
Purpose of Expansion Slots
They let users:
-
Upgrade their computer (e.g., add better graphics)
-
Add new features (e.g., Wi-Fi, sound enhancements)
-
Replace faulty components
Common Types of Expansion Cards
Expansion Card | Function |
---|---|
Graphics Card (GPU) | Enhances video and game performance |
Sound Card | Improves audio quality and features |
Network Card (NIC) | Adds or improves wired internet connection |
Wi-Fi Card | Adds wireless connectivity |
TV Tuner Card | Allows TV signals to be received on a PC |
Capture Card | Records video input (e.g., for streaming) |
Types of Expansion Slots
1. PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect)
-
Older type of slot, mostly phased out.
2. PCIe (PCI Express) – Most common today
-
Modern and faster version of PCI.
-
Comes in different sizes based on how much data it can handle:
-
PCIe x1 – small cards (e.g., sound cards)
-
PCIe x4 – medium bandwidth
-
PCIe x8 – less common
-
PCIe x16 – used for graphics cards
